Dr. Frederick Gardes
Short Biography
Frederic Gardes was born in France in 1977. He earned his first degree at the University
of Rennes in Fance, earning a DUT in Physics. In 1999 he decided to undertake further
study first at the University of Portsmouth where he earned a BSc in Applied Physics and
finaly at Northumbria University where he earned a MSc in Optoelectronic and
Communication Systems. Upon graduation, he gained employment with a large

for the maintenance of their infrastructure for the EMEA and Pacific region. Late 2004, he
joined the University of Surrey as a Ph.D. student to undertake further study with the
pioneering Silicon Photonics Research Group under the supervision of Professor Graham
T. Reed. His research interests include integrated optics in silicon-on-insulator (SOI),
numerical simulation of optical and semiconductor components, optical modulators based
on the plasma dispersion effect and ring resonators.
